A recipe for play : earth and collaboration
We’re delighted to have been commissioned to create a rammed earth playscape as part of the British Ceramics Biennial in September. Utilising our expertise in the material, garnered from the recently completed Rammed Earth House in Wiltshire, the installation will be site specific for a courtyard in Stoke-on-Trent.
The project is a collaborative effort between Tuckey Design Studio, BCB Associate Artist Sarah Fraser, rammed earth specialist Sami Akkach and University of Staffordshire Architecture students. The installation comprises pre-cast rammed earth monkey bars, a sand pit and stepping stones, among others, partly formed from recycled clay spoil. Handmade glazed ceramic tiles are inset, providing decoration, colour and ensuring durability. Modular elements for the project also formed the basis of our submission for the RA Summer Exhibition this year.
The playscape will address the fact that the central Stoke is currently without a children’s playground and activate an underused public space. During the Biennial families will be able to engage with the project and the rammed earth process in the engagement space.
