Crafting an English winery

We have recently been commissioned to renovate a mid-century concrete frame barn, home to Titch Hill winery.  The building will be a functioning winery, expanding the facilities of the Worthing based natural wine producer.

The barn is positioned overlooking a large estate, with vineyards, wheat and barley fields sweeping down towards the coastline. One of the projects defining principles is to utilise the wealth of material available on the site; retaining the existing structure, repurposing unnecessary elements, and making use of agricultural by-products such as straw and wool to construct new components in the building.

Clay sourced from site will be combined with straw to form ‘strock’ bricks, forming an internal insulative structure housing meeting rooms, offices and a conditioned laboratory. This creative and circular use of raw material continues the knowledge gathered following the completion of Rammed Earth House in Wiltshire.
