Social Bathhouse at the RA Summer Show
It’s an honour to announce that our studio is exhibiting at this year’s Royal Academy Summer Show.
On a characteristically drizzly afternoon, our illustrator Arran Semple attended the exhibition’s wonderfully eccentric Varnishing Day; a long-standing tradition that allows artists and contributors to see their work installed in situ, following a ceremonial procession from St James’s Piccadilly. This year’s exhibition has been thoughtfully curated by Ryan Gander OBE, whose theme of interconnectedness brings together an extraordinary range of works and perspectives.
Our selected piece is an architectural illustration of a proposed social bathhouse set within the Victorian railway arches of London’s Bankside. The project explores how historic infrastructure can be reimagined to support contemporary civic life, proposing a model that could be adapted to urban settings far beyond its original context.
Rendered as a contemporary homage to traditional architectural etchings, the illustration uses layered sectional views to reveal the bathhouse’s varied spaces and rituals; from hot and cold plunges to communal bathing areas, showers and places for relaxation. The brick-vaulted arches are peeled back to expose a steam train passing overhead, while a framed view of St Paul’s Cathedral is revealed through new glazing designed to flood the baths with natural light.
The Royal Academy Summer Exhibition opens on 16 June and runs until 23 August. We’re honoured to be part of this remarkable annual celebration of contemporary art and architecture.
