Hans Road
Positioned amongst esteemed architectural company in Knightsbridge, is a characterful Arts & Crafts townhouse which has embraced its new guise as bespoke workspaces with shared amenities.
Designed by AH Mackmurdo in the 19th century, the Grade II listed terrace had been remodelled in the 1980s into a series of sterile, warren-like offices. The studio was commissioned by Dorrington to overhaul the interiors and to draw on the building’s colourful history and creative provenance.
Historic drawings were referenced to reinstate the original plan, with period proportions, floral motifs, idiosyncratic bay windows and a grand central staircase celebrated.
Rich palettes in each room pay homage to artworks by CFA Voysey, with painted timber panelling subtly changing in thickness and colour as one ascends the building from basement to attic. Authentic fireplaces anchor the meeting rooms and studios, accompanying framed vignettes of Harrods at the front and tranquil gardens, at the rear. Within the centre of the building spacious landings provided an opportunity to integrate bathrooms and kitchenettes on each level.
The strong sense of craft is further enhanced by furniture, textiles and commissioned artworks which sensitively respond to the buildings’ domestic heritage.
